
Description
Fine Arts (art and music) and Physical Education teachers must be knowledgeable educators who can support students by providing instruction that will help them become proficient readers and writers in the content areas. Through this professional development, Fine Arts teachers will closely examine the nature and significance of literacy learning and the critical aspects of literacy development. The course is designed to provide the information necessary for these professionals to make complex instructional decisions that connect theory and practice which will support student achievement. Participants will have an opportunity to develop shared beliefs and align those beliefs with research-based practices. Based on relevant and recent research, this professional development offers a context for Fine Arts participants to study, develop, share, and learn effective methods of instruction to meet students’ diverse interests and needs.

Prerequisites
This is an intermediate level course for teachers, literacy coaches, curriculum specialists, professional development specialists, or other school personnel. Participants are expected to have regular access to computers with Internet access. In addition, participants should be proficient with browsing the Internet, uploading and downloading content, navigating to computer files, and with using word processing software, email, and attachments.
