Description

The purpose of this course, R2S Instructional Strategies for Reading, is to prepare in-service early childhood and elementary teachers to integrate science of reading principles into their instructional practices. As active learners, teachers use the information from this professional development course to construct instructional plans that align grade level classroom practices with the SC College- and Career-Ready Standards that include Foundations, Applications of Reading, Research and Communications. Focus is on developing curriculum resources and instructional practices that scaffold learning, reflect scope and sequence, and display cohesiveness from one grade level to another.  Teachers will have an opportunity to develop shared beliefs and align those beliefs with evidenced-based practices. Based on relevant and recent research, this professional development course offers a context for teachers to study, develop, share, and learn effective instructional methods to meet their students’ various needs.

Prerequisites

This is an intermediate level course for teachers, literacy coaches, curriculum specialists, professional development specialists, or other school personnel. Participants are expected to have regular access to computers with Internet access. In addition, participants should be proficient with browsing the Internet, uploading and downloading content, navigating to computer files, and with using word processing software, email, and attachments.
